120 Years of Heritage
From the old Sakrebailu village to today — a journey of conservation, care, and quiet dedication.
A Journey of Growth
What started around 1905 near the old Sakrebailu village — now submerged under the Tunga Reservoir — has evolved into one of Karnataka's most celebrated elephant training and conservation centres.
Today, Sakrebailu Elephant Camp houses 20 magnificent elephants along the banks of the sacred River Tunga near Shivamogga.
In the early years, the camp elephants played a crucial role in logging operations — hauling timber from the dense forests of Agumbe, Sringeri, Kudremukh, and Gangamoola for the construction of railway lines and electricity poles.
Our Journey Milestones
Sakrebailu Elephant Camp established near the old Sakrebailu village, now submerged under the Tunga Reservoir backwaters.
As part of the Tunga Reservoir Project, the original Sakrebailu village was relocated and the elephant camp moved with it.
Sagar joins the camp from Sagara Forest Division — went on to carry the Ambari at Shimoga Dasara 15 times.
Camp shifted to its current Sakrebailu location with ample water from River Tunga and generous forest space.
Airavata — an orphaned calf rescued from Sakaleshpura Forest Range — joins the camp and becomes a star attraction.
Camp reaches 20 resident elephants. Vikranth and Makana arrive from Belur Range, Hassan — the newest members.
